Review

Capsule - Not the pill you want to swallow

Yesterday, a new video editor dropped on the market with a ton of microinfluencer hype. It’s called Capsule.

It’s purpose? An AI editor for content & marketing teams. Basically, people who need to use video but A) want to easily organize brand standards and B) aren’t actually good at video editing.

So it needs to be simple & well organized. Does it accomplish this?

Not really.

If we had to sum it up, it’s basically a worse version of Descript with some animation templates.

Let’s review some of the individual elements.

Editing footage:

Barren. Not many options to edit the actual raw footage. No color correction, lighting adjustments. No transitions.

And you can’t drag and move the actual video in the frame. Instead, you have to type in manual X,Y coordinates. Probably one of the worst possible UI choices for a quick video editor.

Animation templates:

The animation templates they have are decent. They’re smooth and relatively well designed. There’s a limited amount of options, from intros to quotes and call to actions. Cool concept.

The problem comes with customization. There’s only 3 ā€œthemesā€ which change the color, font and animation style. Inside those themes, there’s a very limited number of things you can do to alter them.

With this current theme ā€œBalanceā€, you can’t even change the background image, nor is what I’m typing showing up on the actual animation 😐.

The worst part? Try to create a custom theme and you get routed to a BOOK A CALL FUNNEL 🤔

Technical experience:

We tried running this software in Brave browser & Safari. Both times, we faced numerous glitches & technical friction points:

  • automatic sign out

  • infinite load screens

  • changes not appearing on the video

  • captions consistently not aligning with the video

Basic things simply don’t work well. Very disappointing.

Overall: AVOID

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. This is in beta, and it’s 2 days old.

But man, you really can’t afford to onboard your marketing & content team to something with such big flaws.

Our take: Bring on a video strategist to teach your team Descript or Adobe Premiere & help them build a repeatable system to get content out quick.

The learning curve will be the same, and the end products will be so much better. Plus, the product will actually work.

AI x Video

YouTube launches 4 new AI powered tools.

What is this:

BIG news in the world of YouTube.

At YouTube’s ā€œMade on YouTubeā€ event on September 21, they dropped an bombshell.

They’re launching 4 new AI features to make video creation even easier & more accessible to everyone.

  1. AI Assistant

  2. Speech Dubbing

  3. Generative AI for YouTube Shorts

  4. YouTube Create - YouTube’s own video editing app

Check out Mario Joos’s breakdown of the features here šŸ‘‡

Why does this matter:

This is another sign that AI is making video content production more accessible to everyone. Editing will become more commodified & push button.

This also means more and more people will start creating video content in your niche.

With production getting automated for everyone, the more human elements will set you apart: ideation, storytelling, real world experience & personality.

Experts Say…

Hunter Weiss is the world’s #1 short form animator in the world. His videos for people like Dan Koe & Zac Williams have brought in hundreds of millions of views.

He made a short thread breaking down of some of his best.
