Let’s begin

ANALYSIS: The State of Video Captions

Captions has been the hot topic since short video content blew up in 2020.

People were rapidly searching for “what works”, testing all sorts of things.

Many people were taking the white bars “square” format popularized by GaryVee on Instagram in 2017-2019 and just stretching it vertical.

Remember square videos? Lol we do.

Then, a guy came around you might’ve heard of: Alex Hormozi.

And with Hormozi, came “Hormozi captions”

These consisted of:

  • bold font

  • color tracking based on Alex’s speech

  • emojis

  • tilts & small movements

For the time, these were revolutionary simply because they were effortful & new. They became the “standard” style.

But now?

There’s over 2,500 people on fiverr selling “Alex Hormozi Captions” right now.

The maxim rule: once a trend becomes a market, you need to start looking ahead.

And that’s where we’re at now. Even Hormozi doesn’t use that caption style anymore.

So, what to do?

If you’re using captions on your videos, try 1 of 2 things:

  1. Use native captions from each app

A recent finding from TikTok’s Creative Codes is that videos do well when they look native. High volume testing from other creators on Instagram shows the same. Therefore, in-app captions are a safe & very quick option for most.

  1. Create a custom, on-brand caption template in your editor

If you’re going for a more premium, cohesive brand feel, try making your own style. Your videos will stand out. Plus, the brand experience will get extended reach. Little touches matter. An easy app to do this in is captions.ai.

Test both and see what you like.

For a final word, meet Marco, Creative Director @ Starter Story.

He’s driven tens of millions of views & blew up Starter Story to over 230k on IG.

“People should view captions like subtitles on a Netflix show. They’re mostly a preference, and not all content needs them. But they do help people follow along and stay engaged.

If you do use them, it shouldn’t take away from the video itself. Keep sh*t simple - consistent font / color / style, make sure they’re readable, then toss them in the video.

And don’t use emoji’s - I scroll past every time I see.”
